Creative Writing: The Art of The Short Story
Is your mind brimming with story ideas most suited to the shorter form? Do you feel the urge to write using the form mastered by writers such as Frank O’Connor, Anton Chekhov, Alice Munro, Raymond Carver, Lorrie Moore, and George Saunders? If so, this exciting course is for you. Over the space of eight weeks, you will read and discuss short stories from a diverse range of writers and regularly engage in fun writing exercises that will prepare you for your journey as a short story writer. Each week will be dedicated to a different aspect of the short story form, including: structure/style, plot, scene-setting, themes, voice, characterisation, dialogue, and conclusions. Designed for beginner writers, this course will expand your knowledge of the art of the short story and provide you with the narrative tools needed to start writing stories of your own. Introduction to Life Writing
Is the story of your life waiting to be written? Do you feel a strong urge to turn your memories into a compelling story? This exciting course in Life Writing will help you to get started. Over the space of eight weeks, you will learn about autobiography, memoir, biography and other forms of writing directly inspired by true lived experience. You will read excerpts from a diverse range of works of non-fiction and engage in weekly writing exercises that will help you to prepare for your own life writing journey. You will also learn about invaluable research practices, the incorporation of other fields of interest and forms of literature into your life writing, the role that memory plays in the writing process, the ethics of life writing, and how to edit your work. Designed for beginner writers, this fun and versatile course will get you to think in new ways about storytelling and inspire you to turn the defining moments of your life into a potential page-turner.
