Quiet space for writing & study each conference morning 8-11am

Make the conference weekend a productive one for your writing, reading or research project. Enjoy the facility of the Knockmaroon Suite each morning and work on your project, or catch up on that ever growing reading list. The space will be a quiet one, with a luxurious lobby outside for conversations on books and writing. Still & sparkling water & mints complimentary.

ARCHITECTS OF LITERATURE

What great Irish writers have created worlds in fiction? What goes into creating a fictional universe? What resonates with us? Can we get lost? How do plot and world work together? Presentation style followed by Q&A.

MEET LIBERTIES PRESS

Meet Sean O’Keeffe of Liberties Press. Liberties Press is one of Ireland’s leading independent publishers, with several hundred titles in print and an active international presence. They publish non-fiction and fiction by authors ranging from presidents and taoisigh to debut novelists and poets. They will discuss current titles and what they are seeking from writers at the moment. Presentation style followed by Q&A.

WRITING & PUBLISHING HISTORY & ARCHEOLOGY

Meet Ronan Colgan of the Wordwell Group. The Wordwell Group publish History Ireland, Archeology Ireland and Books Ireland magazines, alongside Wordwell Books and Eastwood Books. The group have published many of Ireland’s finest authors in the fields of history, heritage and archeology. They will discuss current titles and particular projects they are seeking from writers at the moment. Presentation style followed by Q&A.

MEET THE INDUSTRY

Are you ready to submit your writing ? Get industry insights on your project through a face-to-face meeting with an industry professional. One-to one style.

Times: Friday 1st July 3.15 – 5.00pm / Saturday 2nd July 2.00 – 3.00pm.

CREATIVE WORKSHOP

Join a traditional creative writers’ workshop. Read your work and receive feedback from peers and tutor. Discuss development, themes and next steps.

Time: Friday & Saturday at 5.00 – 6.00pm.

OPENING OF CONFERENCE

Join us for a warm welcome to all participants, followed by a short presentation on the weekend, what is on and suggestions on how to get the most out of your conference experience. Includes some local information on the area. Followed by Q&A.

Time: Friday 7.00 – 7.30pm.

ARCHITECTS OF WRITING

Do you have a map or blueprint before you start to write? One approach to any writing project is the meticulous plan. How does this work in writing practice? What are the challenges in creating fictional worlds from scratch? What if you are working in historical periods? How do we deal with the restrictions of reality? This session investigates these questions. Presentation style followed by Q&A.

Time: Friday 1st July 7.30 – 8.30pm.

MEET WILDFIRE FILMS

Meet producer Martha O’Neill of Wildfire FilmsWildfire Films is a producer of award-winning film and television programmes. The company is based in Dublin, Ireland, but work internationally. They will discuss current films and programmes, the process of production and the types of writing projects they are seeking to produce. Presentation style followed by Q&A.

MEET BETIMES BOOKS

Meet Tanja Slijepcevic of Betimes Books. Betimes Books endeavour to support visionary writing and the making of great literature. They are dedicated to helping authors succeed and creating conditions in which they can continue to create. They will discuss current titles, the process of manuscript acceptance and what they are looking for at the moment. Presentation style followed by Q&A.

Time: Saturday 2nd July 12.30 – 1.30pm.

FREEDOM IN WRITING

Do you like to start writing ‘in the dark’? One approach to any writing project is no more than an image, a sound or a voice. The writer progresses from there, with little idea of what is going to happen next. How does this work? What are the challenges in creating fictional worlds with little or no guidelines? How do we bring readers along, if we don’t know the way? This session investigates these questions. Seminar style with group exercise, open discussion and workshop.

Venue: Knockmaroon Suite.

Time: Saturday 2nd July 3.15pm – 4.15pm.

GERRY MULLINS

Gerry Mullins is a former travel writer and magazine editor, and he has also worked in journalism and finance in San Francisco. His previous works include the critically acclaimed Dublin Nazi No.1 (2013). His debut novel, Testosterone, Dublin 8, was published in 2020. Presentation style followed by reading and Q&A.

OWEN DWYER

Meet Dublin Author Owen Dwyer in conversation with Martin Keaveney. Owen’s recent novels are Number Games and The Garfield Conspiracy. Includes a special screening of a short film based on The Garfield Conspiracy. Followed by Q&A.

COLIN O’SULLIVAN

Colin O’Sullivan’s first novel Killarney Blues won the “Prix Mystere de la Critique” in France. His third novel The Dark Manual is due to be made into a major TV series. His most recent work is The True Story of Binderella and Other Siblings. In conversation with Martin Keaveney via video link. Followed by Q&A.

EDDIE HOBBS

Eddie Hobbs is an author and broadcaster. He is the originator and presenter of the Irish TV series Rip-Off Republic. His latest work is The First Heresy (2022). In conversation with Martin Keaveney. Followed by Q&A.

READINGS & PERFORMANCES

After three days of writing, reading or researching, why not share your work in a relaxed atmosphere on Sunday afternoon? You can read something you have developed during your time at the conference, or read a piece prepared earlier. There is also the opportunity for spoken word performance, research presentations, short drama sketches or short film screenings. May be organised at other times over the weekend if required. You are welcome to invite family and friends to this exciting conclusion to the Conference (Please send names in advance for seating here). Slots limited to 10 minutes.
